MOLOKAI (The Hawaiian Island)

Highlights

MOLOKAI LANDSCAPE:

Molokai is the fifth largest of the six-major Hawaiian Islands encompassing over 261 square miles of terrain.  It is located eight miles from Maui and includes Hawaii's longest beach; the three-mile Papohaku.

Three separate volcanoes creating Eastern Molokai, Western Molokai and Kalaupapa Peninsula creates the geography.  The East side receives ample moisture and rainfall that have created deep valleys, streams, waterfalls and the world's most lush and highest sea cliffs.  East Molokai is the larger and more dramatic of the two volcanoes that created this beautiful island.   While the West and Central side of Molokai is much drier in nature and is marked by plateaus and rolling hills. Both these regions are marked with farmlands, resort and business development and ranchland.

The World’s highest sea cliffs drop into the ocean along the northeast shore of Molokai.  Molokai has no stoplights, nightclubs, supermarkets and the existing buildings are no higher than three stories.  More than half of the islands 6,800+ residents are either half-blooded or full-blooded Hawaiian ancestry.   This is the home of some spectacular ancient structures, including a string of enormous fish ponds that line the south shore.  The hospitality and harmony of the people, the waves, the swaying palm trees and the winds are a way of life on Molokai.

All over Molokai there are endless adventures for the visitors, yet none in Hawaii matches the pilgrimage to Kalaupapa, which is now designated as a National Historic Park.  Here it is where you go on a three-mile guided mule trek, descending around 1,700 feet via 26 switchback trails into Father Damien’s Saint Philomena Church and Memorial.

A sign at the Molokai airport clues you in right away, “Slow Down, This is Molokai!”  There are no shopping malls, no neon lights, no traffic lights and no elevators.  Indeed, on this very special island, folks go along at a very different pace.  Visitors  come for the thrilling activities on land and sea, the stirring tropic beauty, the excitement and fun.  In summary, Molokai breeds outdoor adventures, snorkeling, horseback riding, biking and wandering some of  the biggest and least visited beaches in the state.
